As a child growing up in Cuba, I fell in love with Haiti. Haiti jumped from the pages of “The Kingdom of this World,” a novel that brought to life the Haitian Revolution. I couldn’t have know then that almost 30 years later, and living in the US, I would have the opportunity to work in Africa.
Upon leaving Africa and returning to the US, I continued my education, never forgetting about the passion I developed around humanitarian work, and my love of Haiti.
As I was finishing my studies, a friend told me she was moving to Haiti to take over an orphanage. I was drawn to go with her. In January 2015 I was on my way to Haiti. One of the first things I learned was about the restavek problem there. Restaveks (“child slaves”) are children from families in rural communities.
We offer educational opportunities to over 700 students with two bilingual schools and support for higher education, transforming their futures.
